6 Jumada Al-Thani 1421 A.H., September 6, 2000

Ibn `Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had said:

The superstructure of Islam is raised on five pillars: Testifying that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is his bondsman and Messenger; the establishment of prayer; the payment of Zakah (poor-due); the Pilgrimage to the House of Allah (Ka`bah); and the fasting during Ramadan.

(Agreed upon)

Lessons Deduced:
1. The hadith pinpoints the five major cornerstones of Islam and explains that whoever denies any of them is unbeliever.
2. A Muslim should constantly perform these duties.
3. It is preferable that a Muslim performs supererogatory acts related to the five major duties.
